Actions and recommendations to accelerate the circular economy in construction and renovation

ICEDD

Mission objectives

To examine, on behalf of the Federal Council for Sustainable Development, the policy levers that can be utilised by federal and regional public authorities to accelerate circular construction and renovation, with the aim of issuing concrete recommendations to the federal level.

Achievements and impact

  • Identification of systemic and specific barriers hindering the roll-out of the circular economy in the construction sector (low risk appetite, classification of reused materials, end-of-waste status, low recycling rates for non-aggregate materials, etc.).
  • Cross-analysis of existing instruments and initiatives already implemented in Belgium across all stages of the value chain (design, production, construction, recovery).
  • Literature review and consultation with stakeholders in the field to ensure that recommendations are grounded in the sector’s realities.
  • Formulation of priority courses of action for the federal government to accelerate the circular transition of construction products and materials.
  • Publication of a final reference report for the FRDO-CFDD.
