Assessment of the environmental impact of Belgian green bonds

Mission objectives

To develop and apply methodologies for assessing the environmental impacts of green bonds (Green Bonds / green OLOs) issued by Belgium in 2018 and 2022.

Achievements and impact

• Development of a methodology for assessing environmental impacts applicable to the two Belgian green bond issues (2018 and 2022).
• Assessment of projects financed by these bonds within the context of major environmental policies, such as the development and maintenance of the rail network or the installation of offshore wind turbines in the North Sea.
• Production of impact reports published and made available on the Belgian Debt Agency’s website, thereby enhancing the transparency and credibility of the government’s green finance initiatives.
