Calculation of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions in the Brussels Region

Mission objectives

To contribute to the development of the methodological framework for calculating indirect greenhouse gas emissions in the Brussels Region, as provided for in the Climate Ordinance of 17 June 2021, and to the ex ante assessment of additional reduction measures.

Achievements and impact

• Definition of a methodological framework for calculating indirect GHG emissions at regional level, forming the basis for the future official framework to be established by the Brussels Government.
• Contribution to the impact assessment of additional reduction measures, with a view to strengthening the reduction targets for 2030.
• Mission directly linked to Brussels’ carbon neutrality pathway set out in the Climate Ordinance (-40 per cent by 2030, -67 per cent by 2040, -90 per cent by 2050 compared with 2005 for direct emissions).
