Mission objectives

Help Wallonia move from understanding climate risks to implementing adaptation measures, through a comprehensive regional assessment.

Achievements and impact

  • Coordination of a consortium of 40 academic experts over 20 months.
  • Updated climate projections for 3 global warming levels (+2, +3 and +4 °C), based on 6 global models downscaled with the MAR regional model.
  • 40 risk indicators and 700 maps covering ecosystems, water, agriculture, the economy, population and the built environment, published on a mapping portal.
  • Estimated cost of inaction: over €1 billion per year for heatwaves, nearly €600 million per year in lost ecosystem services and nearly €200 million per year for agriculture.
  • 30 workshops and working groups, followed by benchmarking and prioritisation of adaptation measures around 8 “resilience pillars”.
  • Reports and results published on the AWAC Climate Portal (portailclimat-awac.be), providing the basis for the Walloon adaptation strategy.
