Improving Brussels’ energy balance: wood-based energy and the construction sector

Mission objectives

To improve understanding of wood-energy flows and energy consumption in the construction and renovation sector, with a view to enhancing the reliability of Brussels’ energy balance and meeting international reporting requirements.

Achievements and impact

• Conducting two targeted studies (wood energy and construction/renovation) utilising field surveys, international comparative estimates and modelling of inter-regional trade.
• Production of more detailed data on the production, imports and consumption of wood energy in the Brussels Region.
• Estimation of energy consumption in the construction/renovation sector by energy source, end-use and building type.
• Analysis of uncertainties and identification of areas for improvement in future energy balance data.
