HEFAISTOS – High tEmperature heat and new Feedstocks for Sustainable zerO emission induStry
Objectives
Assess to what extent, at what cost, and under what technical conditions, achieving carbon neutrality in high-temperature industrial processes can improve the balancing of the electricity transmission network and Belgium’s security of supply.
Execution
- Characterisation of the diversity of high-temperature industrial processes in Belgium and identify the low-carbon technologies capable of meeting their needs.
- Assessment of the supply security implications associated with the importation of green molecules (H₂, NH₃, e-CH₄, methanol) required by certain decarbonisation pathways.
- Update of the Belgian TIMES energy model with improved industrial data and new technologies in order to model carbon neutrality scenarios.
- Conduction to a techno-economic feasibility study at the Aperam Châtelet site to confront analytical results with real industrial constraints.
- Formulation of technical, economic, and policy recommendations for public decision-makers and industrial stakeholders.
